After that I've been working in advertising, at a company called Cirkus animation, for around 5 years now. Specifically for the video, I know the director Matt Pitt and asked him if I could help out. As to whether you can do this without formal training - for sure, if you're willing to watch heaps of tutorial videos and have a strong desire to make CG things. A design background would totally help with this. However, you can't really beat formal training (if it's good) as it accelerates you more than you could personally. It also pushes you to work on briefs you may not have thought of otherwise - and on top of that, you meet some crazy people. ;) Recently I've worked with people from MDS, and can vouch for the quality of their teaching by the quality of the grads that come through there.
